A Fine Romance is a British situation comedy starring husband-and-wife team Judi Dench and Michael Williams. Dench's sister and brother-in-law were played by Susan Penhaligon and Richard Warwick. It was produced by London Weekend Television and written by Bob Larbey. It was first broadcast on 8 November 1981. It lasted for 26 episodes over four series; the final episode being broadcast on 17 February 1984. The series takes its name from a song in the 1936 film Swing Time, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, which Dench recorded as the theme music. The series was nominated for nine BAFTA British Academy Television Awards and a winner of two, both for Dench's performance in 1982 and 1985.

E1 The Telephone Call 1984-01-06 · 30 min Months have passed. Helen and Phil now have a baby boy. Mike's landscaping business is doing well; but, Laura is back in England having now run away from her boyfriend in Brussels and is again upsetting the lives of everyone from whom she ran in the first place.

E2 In Hiding 1984-01-13 · 30 min Thinking that Laura is in trouble, Mike flies to Brussels to find her. Helen and Phil are beside themselves with frustration at Laura's insensitivity.

E3 Mike's New Girlfriend 1984-01-20 · 30 min Laura decides it is time to move from Helen and Phil's. She goes to Mike's apartment to retrieve the things that she left and starts in with her usual psychotic attitude upon finding Mike's new, younger girlfriend in residence.

E4 A Weekend Away 1984-01-27 · 30 min Upset that Mike now seems to be going out with Elaine, Laura goes to spend the weekend with her parents, Tom and Alice, in the hopes that they can make some sense of the relationship. However, Mike and Elaine quarrel because she realises that he still has feelings for Laura.

E5 Problems 1984-02-03 · 30 min Laura goes hunting for a new flat and Mike insists on going along. Wilfred is being intimidated by his former neighbor who is now a client of the landscaping firm. Terry trades clients with Wilfred which only leads to more trouble. Laura and Mike decide to try and rekindle their romance.

E6 A Romantic Meal 1984-02-10 · 30 min It is resolved that Laura will move back into the apartment and Mike will move out. Mike's attempt to ask Laura a very important question is continually interrupted.

E7 Happy Ever After? 1984-02-17 · 30 min Mike and Laura are more stunned than thrilled about their decision, and the fuss Laura's family makes doesn't help. When the farmhouse slips out of their grasp, the old despair seems poised to take over.
